Chapter 33

A few days have passed since Shelly found out she is pregnant, and the excitement of Luke and Roonie's engagement dies down as we gather to lay our dead to rest. After the ceremonies have ended Cade requests for Roonie to join us in the throne room and she agree's naturally. Settled in the throne room, Cade wears a very serious face, one I haven't seen before. "It pains me that we have lost Novus. The doctor was unable to find any direct cause of death to an otherwise healthy man. Perhaps I am over-thinking it, but I just can't help but to wonder if there is something more to this. Unfortunately you were the one that found him, and the last one to have seen him. It's not to imply you had anything to do with it but maybe you might have seen something of importance. Will you please share with us your account of the evening?" Cade asks her. Roonie responds eagerly, "Of course! That evening I went up to the library to grab a book before you and Novus were meant to have your meeting in there. I arrived and began looking for a book, and after a few minutes I thought I heard someone enter the room, and assumed it was the two of you. I saw Novus take a seat, and I hurried along grabbing my book and turning to leave the room. Something made me look over my shoulder and I thought I saw Thistle peeking around a bookshelf, but before I could get a good look, the blackout happened. When the lights came back Novus was dead but there was no one else in the room." Cade furrows his brow and thinks for a moment. "Well I thank you for the explanation. I know you would never do anything of the sort, but please understand I have to question anyone that would possibly be involved" Cade tells her, then turning to the guard, requests for Thistle to join them as Roonie is dismissed.

Roonie and the guard exit the room, leaving Cade and I to ourselves. "What do you think? I know she is your sister but do you think she had something to do with Novus's death?" I ask Cade. "Absolutely not! She couldn't hurt a fly, even if she wanted to her clumsiness would fault her greatly" he replies. I tell him that I agree with her innocence. "Let's see what Thistle has to say. I'm not sure why, but I get a strange feeling about her." I tell him. Moments later Thistle arrives looking happy and greets us as she enters the room. We return the greeting and Cade asks for Thistle's account of the evening. Thistle looks offended but replies that, that evening she told Bonnie and Arthur that she was going to their room to read and play. She explained that she went straight there, then when the blackout occurred she was frightened but waited just where she was until finally Arthur found her. "You can ask Papa Arthur, he was the one that came and got me!" Thistle tells us. Once again Cade asks the guard to find someone else, this time he would like to speak to Arthur. Arthur confirms that he found Thistle in their room playing just after the black out, and with that he thanks, and dismisses them. "Maybe I'm just being paranoid, for all we know Novus could have had a heart attack or seizure causing his death" Cade says.

"Announcing Thatcher Mason, Alexander Coleman, and Ector Coleman" the guard states as Thatcher enters the room with two newcomers. The two men  bow and say, "Your majesties, I'm Alexander and this is my twin brother Ector. We're Thatcher's cousins and the last remaining Dukes of Blue Haven. When our kingdom was attacked we made our way through the hidden passages in the castle to get the people we could to safety. We managed to get about thirty of our people out of there and get them to the safety in the caves of the coves. It's just at the edge of our kingdom, and has served well for our needs, but now we find ourselves running low on supplies. Ector and I set out to find help and stumbled upon your kingdom" Alex tells us. "We never thought we'd find Thatcher here. He tells us he's been staying here as he thought our kingdom was completely wiped out" Ector adds.

Cade nods and ponders for a moment before replying, "We can surely help you with some supplies for the remaining survivors. I have some empty cottages in the village that your people can stay in. I'm sorry you all had to go through such tragedy. You and Ector are welcome to stay here in the castle with Thatcher if you wish to do so.  I will send two of my best men with you to gather your people get them all settled in the village until we can rebuild your kingdom. I might in turn ask a favor?" Thatcher, Alexander and Ector exchanges looks, and Thatcher replies, "Yes your majesty?" Cade continues, "Brendlewood is more than happy to house your people, offer them protection, even help rebuild your kingdom. I ask however, do you have any men in your group that might be willing to stand with us in battle against a powerful kingdom. Dragon Valley has been terrorizing many of the surrounding kingdoms, and we aim to put a stop to it."

Thatcher smiles nodding, while Ector's face shows a look of surprise and thought, but before either of them can speak Alexander answers quickly, "Of course your majesty! We are familiar with that kingdom, as they are the ones who destroyed us. We are more than happy to repay your kindness in assisting in the battle." Ector's eyes grow wide and then scowls slightly, "But brother our men are not prepared for battle, nor do we have many as it is." Cade mentions that the battle would be very far off so the men would have plenty of time to prepare. "We want to make sure the timing is just right, and our men are ready. We cannot afford to lose this fight. If Dragon Valley succeeds they will dominate all the surrounding kingdoms!"  The three men discuss and finally conclude that they will accept Brendlewood's help as well as assist in the battle. "Very good! Our troops have only just returned from a smaller battle and we are planning a celebration of their return. It will be held in two days time. I invite you to stay and make merry with us, afterwards I will prepare a small team to accompany you to gather your people" Cade adds. Thatcher, Alexander, and Ector agree and thank Cade and I. "You all are free to go. I am sure you have much to catch up on" Cade smiles as the three men exit the room.

Two days later ...

The evening of the celebration has arrived and once again the castle is decorated beautifully. All of the guests have arrived and everyone is gathering in the grand hall. Thatcher and Shelly enter the room as Cade taps his wine glass for a speech. "Family, friends, and honored guests, let us welcome you this evening as we commend our troops returning home from Battle Parfon. I would also like to take a moment now to remember those gallant men that have fallen in battle. May they live on in spirit forever" Cade says, then pauses as the grand hall grows silent. After a moment of silence Cade continues, "Thank you. On a lighter note we have some newcomers with us this evening." Cade extends his hand to the direction of Alex and Ector. "We've recently discovered that their kingdom has fallen, and we plan to help them rebuild. Please welcome, from the kingdom of Blue Haven, Alex and Ector Coleman. Please make yourselves at home, and enjoy the party" I say as the guests smile and clap welcoming the twins.

The guests begin mingling and as I chat with Alex, Tulip approaches. "Nora I'm sorry to interrupt, I just came from the kitchen, and Cookie apologizes for the delay and said the hors d'oeuvres will be out shortly." "Thank you Tulip..." I start but notice she seems to be distracted by Alex. I smile to myself and clear my throat. "Oh! Sorry!" giggles Tulip nervously. "Tulip, this is Alexander Coleman Duke of Blue Haven. Alex this is Tulip Warner Dame of Brendlewood" I say. "It's nice to meet you" she tells him. Tulip blushes slightly as Alex takes her hand kissing it softly. "The pleasure is mine" he says gazing into her eyes.

"Your majesty, it's a pleasure to meet you!" says a very beautiful girl. "Good evening, it's nice to meet you too..." I reply. "Oh I'm so sorry, where's my brain? I'm Clover, Clover Greene!" she laughs. Jax grins and puts his arm around Clover, but notices Alex and Tulip in a tender kiss. As they break away from each other Alex extends a hand to Jax. "My apologies, where are my manners! Alexander Coleman, and you good sir?" Alex asks. Tulip pipes up, "Oh this is Jax Debois, my ex-boyfriend." Jax just looks at Alex's hand then at Tulip then scoffs and replies, "Well this is my new girlfriend. You might know her, Clover Greene!" Tulip frowns slightly as she leans over to him and whispers, "At least be a gentleman and shake the Duke's hand!"

"Why Tulip I just love your gown! It's such a strikin' color!" Clover says grinning widely. "Oh, uh... thanks" Tulip says apathetically. Clovers gown was skin tight and didn't leave much to the imagination. It must have been a spell that kept her bust from popping out of the low cut bodice, and the slit up the side may as well have gone up to her hip! One of the villagers husbands stands a few feet away staring at Clover until he is jolted back to reality by his wife's palm crashing against his cheek. The woman scowls and storms off with her husband following after her apologizing. Clover just smiles and shrugs, "Happens all the time. I will just never understand! Jax be a dear and get me a refreshment?" Jax glances at Tulip but she's already chatting away merrily with Alex. Hanging his head Jax proceeds to fetch Clover a beverage, as I mention to the group that I'm off to find Shelly and the bunch.

Passing Thatcher and Ector talking by the fireplace I overhear them having a slight argument. "I'm telling you, she's the right one for me. I can't explain it, other than I felt it from the moment I met her in the forest. She's sweet, loyal, caring, plus she's carrying my child. I don't want her to think that's the only reason I would pop the question though. I love her and plan to make her my queen" Thatcher says. "I don't know cousin, I get a really bad vibe from her. Didn't you say she's from the kingdom of Dragon Valley? They're the ones who nearly wiped out our people. Come to think of it I don't know how much I trust this Brendlewood place either. The air seems full of fairy dust, probably brainwashing us all!" Ector says gruffly. "I've been here for quite some time now, and I'm perfectly fine, and Shelly wouldn't have fled Dragon Valley if she was happy with their leadership! I don't know why you have become so paranoid but you need to relax a bit. I had hoped my family of all people would be supportive of my happiness, but maybe I will have better luck discussing this with Alex" Thatcher snaps in frustration. Ector furrows his brow and sits his drink down a bit forcefully before storming off, leaving Thatcher alone staring into the fireplace.

After hearing their squabble, I decide to check on Thatcher and reaching him I tentively place my hand on his shoulder asking, "Is everything all right?" Thatcher sighs and takes a deep breath before replying, "Not really, I just wish my cousin was more supportive of my decision, that's all." "Well I'm all ears, and I'm a good listener" I reply with a smile. Thatcher gives me a half-smile and explains his dilemma. Giving him a gentle hug I tell him, "The way I see it is, if you make each other happy and the two of you love each other, then you're family should be supportive of your decision. I do know this, there is no way Shelly would ever think that the only reason you would propose to her is because she's with child. She loves you, I can see it every time she looks at you, and her eyes light up when even your name is spoken. If you know she's the one for you, then ask her." Sadness leaves Thatcher's eyes as he says, "I'm...I'm gonna do it! I will ask her to be my wife! Thank you Nora, you really have a way with these types of things, now I know why everyone comes to you when they need to talk things out!"

"Have you by chance seen Shelly this evening? Thatcher asks me. "Not since the two of you entered the grand hall earlier. Come on, I'll help you find her" I reply warmly. Thatcher agree's and we decide to check the dining hall. Entering the dining hall, we find Bonnie, Arthur, Luke, Roonie, and Shelly chatting away by the buffet table. Roonie begins eagerly filling her plate with delicacies from the buffet table, but a large plump grape has other plans in store. Roonie reaches to pierce it with her fork but it instead shoots off the edge of the fork, and goes soaring through the air, where it makes its new home in dear Mrs. Winterberry's champagne glass. Remaining unaware of her beverages new ingredient, Mrs. Winterberry takes a large swig of champagne but immediately begins to choke! Mr. Winterberry rushes to his wife, grabbing her around the middle and forces the grape back out. It once again shoots through the air, this time nestling itself back into the pile of grapes from which it just came. Roonie looks nervously from the grapes to Mrs. Winterberry, shrugs and continues filling her plate with other goodies.

Midi refills the veggie tray, and whispers to Roonie with a smile, "I saw that Miss." Roonie's eyes grow wide and she blushes with embarrassment before she moves over to Luke and begins eating. "Midi, I was wondering if you've seen Cade around?" I ask. "Aye Ma'am. We are short handed this evening as a few of the servants are ill, and we're swamped. Not to worry mum we have it under control, but his majesty went down to the cellar to fetch more spirits and wine" Midi explains. "Ok, thank you Midi. Please let me know if the service needs any help, we may be able to slow the food rush some" I reply. Midi nods and thanks me before scurrying off with an empty tray. Rounding the corner and entering the hall, I find Tulip and Alex in the hallway, arms wrapped around each other, enveloped in an intense kiss. So much so that they don't even notice as I pass by them chuckling softly to myself.

A large wooden door leads down to the cellar, and it creaks as it swings open. Brendlewood's cellar was not like the ones in most places. Beautiful wooden floors we laid, fancy shelving for the wine and spirits lined the walls, and a soft warm light filled the room, giving it a cozy glow. In the back corner a plush sofa sat, and was accompanied by a small bookshelf. "Perfect place to curl up with a good book and a glass of wine" I think to myself. "Hello?" Cade's voice calls out. "Yes! It's me" I reply as I round the corner of one of the shelves to where Cade is. "What are you doing babe?" he asks. "Well I couldn't find you upstairs, and after talking with Midi I knew just where to find you. Are you hiding down here?" I ask playfully. "I just needed a break from all the small talk and questions. It's quiet and cool down here, plus now you're here as well. With all that has been happening we haven't really had alot of time just to ourselves have we?" Cade asks with a smirk. He grabs me around the waist and pulls me forcefully to him.

"But what about our guests?" I ask giggling a little. "They will be just fine, won't miss us a bit" he replies, then bites his lip slightly before kissing my neck. Our passion takes us to the couch as Cade kisses me passionately. He delicately unlaces my skirts letting them fall to the floor, then pulls his shirt off and disrobes. Taking me in his arms I wrap my legs around him as he begins kissing along my neck and down to my chest. He tenderly lays me on the couch and lays pressing against me. "This is the first chance I've gotten to have you alone in peace without me having something to take care of. I want you, all of you" he tells me softly, and his fingertips gently run along my chest. "Take me darling" I whisper biting my lip in eagerness. Lovingly, but firmly he makes love to me and I gasp with pleasure. Suddenly Cookie arrives and panic-stricken, bows covering her eyes and whispers, "Majesties I'm so sorry" before fleeing the room.

Early the next morning I invite Shelly to come along as I check on the villagers. "That sounds great! I have been wondering if any more strange things have been happening around here, plus I'd love to get out in this fresh air" she tells me. "I plan on visiting each home, but please stop and rest as much as you need to. With a baby on the way you should take it easy" I say in a concerned tone. Shelly nods and giggles a bit, "Thank you for your concern Nora, but I'll be just fine, really!" Giving her a smile I suggest we start off at the general store and the cottages on the east side of the village and work our way south and around. Shelly agrees and we pack a light lunch and head down to the village.

After checking in at the general store and finding all is well, we travel on to the first cottage, where we find Mr. Mulberry chopping logs outside. "Good morning Mr. Mulberry!" I greet. He bows and returns the greeting before I continue speaking, "Sorry to bother you, but I'm checking in on everyone here in the village. Have you noticed anything strange going on lately?" I ask him. Mr. Mulberry scratches the back of his head, and shaking his head replies, "Can't say I have your highness. Everything has been as calm as can be since the Parfon Battle." I give a sigh of relief and tell him, "Glad to hear everything is back to normal. How's your wife and daughter?" Mr. Mulberry runs his fingers through his bristly beard and grins, "They're doing great! Maggie's been running around like a chicken with her head cut off 'cuz our Lily is going away to college in a few weeks. She's had straight A's in school thanks to Miss Bonnie tutoring some of the kids after school." "That's wonderful!" Shelly says cheerfully. "I'm so glad Bonnie was able to help her with her schooling! We've got to be off, but thank you for your time, and I'm glad all is well." Mr. Mulberry again gives a bow, as Shelly and I head along to the next cottage.

After visiting several cottages and enjoying our lunch, we find ourselves on the edge of the village. "I'm so glad to hear that everything seems to be back to normal around here" Shelly tells me. "You and me both! These are the last two homes to check in on. Why don't you take the Raven's place, and I'll check in on Ms. Violette?" I suggest to Shelly. "Sounds good to me" she replies and we part ways. Old Ms. Violette takes a few minutes to reach the door but looks excited to have company. I explain to her that Shelly and I have been out for hours checking in on everyone to see if any more strange occurrences have been happening. "Well deary everything has been very quiet and peaceful here. Nothin' out of the ordinary. I still feel so awful for the poor Warner's, they died such a horrible death! I used to baby sit for Daisy when we were younger. Saw Miss Tulip the other day, she seems to be doing a little better" she chats. I nod and tell her that Tulip is doing better these days, but is still lost about it. "Poor child, tell her to come visit me sometime" Ms. Violette requests. "I sure will! Thanks for your time, take care!" I say in response as I turn to leave.

"Oh uh, your majesty? I did want to discuss something with you. It's a bit of a secret, a treasure really. In my old age I've no use for it, and with no offspring of my own I have chosen to to pass it along to you. For you, your highness are one of the most fair and noble Queens I've seen in quite some time. It's been passed on for years, in fact there are only two remaining people that even know of it, other than myself. Detrich Clawhorn of Dragon Valley, and April Boggs of Stoneridge...she actually married a human man and moved to his hometown of Blue Haven. But that's neither here, nor there. Oh goodness listen to me ramble! I do apologize! Anyhow, you must keep its powers a secret from everyone. I think it will help protect the kingdom" Ms. Violette tells me. "I promise, but what exactly does it do? I ask her completely intrigued. "Ah! That you will have to find out for yourself! When it's ready, it will reveal its power to you" she smiles and hands me a necklace with a beautiful amulet hanging from it. "Wow, it's very pretty! Are you certain you want to part with it?" I ask. Ms. Violette gives me a little wink and says, "Deary, I already know that you want me to say yes. Now off ya go, catch up to your friend." She gives a little curtsy and basically shoo's me out of her house. Pressing a finger against her lips, she quickly shuts the front door leaving me standing on her front porch bewildered.

Shrugging I clasp my new gift around my neck and look at the sparking amulet. It almost looks as if it's changing color and I hear Shelly say, "Ok see you later!" I look up quickly to show her what Ms. Violette has given me, but Shelly is no where in sight. "Shelly?" I call out then see her off in the distance leaving the Ravens home. "Geez I guess voices really carry out here!" I think as I catch up to Shelly. "All clear at the Raven's place" Shelly tells me once I've reached her. "Great news! No problems at Ms. Violette's either. She's a bit odd, but she's very sweet. Look what she gave me" I say to Shelly. "Ooo! That's gorgeous! Let's call it a day shall we?" Shelly replies. "Of course! I'm beat, plus I'm starving. Let's head back to the castle, I'm sure we'll make it just in time for dinner" I reply brightly.

Glad to be back at the castle, Shelly and I wash up and join the others for dinner. Looks like we're right on time, dinner is just being served up. We talk with the others about our successful trip to the village, and events from last nights welcome home party. "Some of us seemed to really be enjoying ourselves last night" Jax says with a reproachful look at Alex. "Well I certainly did! Jaxie is such a sweetie pie, and a great dancer" Clover giggles, ignorant to Jax's heavy contempt. "Oops! Not again!" She blurts out as a bit of gravy spills from her spoon and straight down her cleavage. She grabs a napkin plunging into her top to mop up the mess. Arthur can't help but stare, and Bonnie gives him a little flick on the shoulder, "AHEM!" she coughs. Arthur quickly snaps out of it and apologizes quietly to Bonnie, who gives him a little kiss on the cheek.

"The eve was filled with drab conversation and distastefully dressed commoners. Why would one associate themselves with these peasants, let alone invite them to a royal affair?" Ector rhetorically states looking down his nose. "Brother" Alex whispers as if to silence him. Cade narrows his eyes at Ector and puts down his fork. "You sir come to us in a time of need, we take you in as a guest, offer help to your kingdom, and you thank us by mocking our way of life? Putting down our villagers? Without them there would be no kingdom. We all work together, we are all Brendlewood" Cade says sternly. Ector laughs snidely before speaking, "Save your magical-faerie-let's-all-be-friends crap. It's survival of the fittest out there. I should know, Blue Haven just witnessed it! You honestly believe their lives are worth as much as yours? A King dies and the entire kingdom mourns. But, a peasant, a filthy nobody dies, and no one bats an eye. Well no one of importance that is." Ector wrinkles his nose, as if repulsed by the idea. Cade throws his napkin down on his plate, rises, and excuses himself from the table before storming off.

I start after him, but Roonie whispers, "You might wanna give him a minute, I haven't seen him that mad in a long time." The table grows silent, not knowing what to say or do. Tulip stares at her plate and I notice that tears are rolling down her cheeks. Suddenly she slams both fists on the table, jumps up from her chair and shouts, "My parents weren't no bodies! They were loved, their lives were important! The villagers and the royals both honor their memory! Their deaths were a horrible act of violence, the whole kingdom was rattled by it. The only filth are people like you! Ones that think they are better than others simply because of their stature!" She flee's from the room at lightening speed sobbing hysterically. Both Alex and Jax excuse themselves at the same time, then catch each others eye and quicken their pace, as if to beat the other one to Tulip.

I stare at my plate somberly, not knowing what to do, and think to myself, "Wow that Ector guy is terribly arrogant! How can he say such things about-" My thoughts stop short as my eye catches my amulet. "I'm sure it's changing colors..." I think. Once again my thoughts are interrupted but this time not by me. I hear Tulip crying as if she is right next to me. "Tulip! I swear I didn't know the villagers that died were your parents. You've gotta believe me! I love you! Please talk to me, you don't even know this guy" I hear Jax say. "Stop it Jax, I told you before it's over between us" she replies. "It seems that you had a chance with her and blew it sir. I ask you to please leave, it is clear Miss Tulip has no wish to speak with you" Alex says. Jax scowls at Alex and replies, "I'll do nothing of the sort!" Tulip looks at him with tears still in her eyes and whispers, "Jax, just go." Jax runs his hands through his hair in frustration and shouts, "Fine! Have it your way!" Turning on his heel he marches out of the room.

"Nora! I said are you ok?" Roonie asks. Blinking in confusion I manage to answer her, "Uh yes, just thinking." I reach up and tuck a strand of hair behind my ear and think to myself, "What in the world just happened? Alex, Jax and Tulip are in the other room...but somehow I was able to see and hear them as if I was right there!" A shriek rips me from my thoughts and I realize that Roonie has knocked her drink over, spilling all over Clover's gown. Shelly calls for Midi, who comes darting around the corner, whisking Clover away to get cleaned up. Thatcher kisses Shelly's cheek and whispers something in her ear, but I can't quite make out what it is. She giggles and nods blushing a little. "If you'll excuse us, we have some things to discuss. Catch up with you later" Thatcher informs what is left of the table. The rest of us agree that after all the chaos of dinner that we'd all like a bit of quiet time, and one by one leave the table.

I decide that now is a good time to check on Cade, and I begin to search for him throughout the castle. Passing one of the rooms I hear Alex consoling Tulip on the other side, and continue along the hall until a sound stops me. I can feel it coming on almost like a vision now, I can see Ector entering the bathroom. He walks over to the shower in the center of the room, where the evening sun shines through the window and onto the shower curtain. A silhouette of a woman is present, and he slowly slides the curtain to the side. Clover stands drenched with water as frothy soap suds slide down her caramel colored skin. She doesn't scream or cover herself but instead bites her lip at Ector who disrobes and joins her in the shower. Upon entering the shower he firmly grasps her by the hair, and bends her over. Clover smiles seductively. Clovers moans echo throughout the bathroom and out into the hall. Clover looks back at Ector and with a grin says, "Ooo! Not bad mister!" Ector grins and replies, "You can't handle more than that, Blondie." The vision fades as I stand in the hall in pure disgust at what just happened. "Wow, that was more than I needed to know. I can't believe those two!" Baffled and slightly queasy from what I just witnessed I wonder to myself what could be causing these strange visions.
